You will find no gallery here. That is not an omission; it is the practice.
Every commission this studio accepts is made for the client alone. The work is not displayed, not repurposed, and not offered as advertisement — because a photograph made in confidence should remain in confidence. New clients receive precisely the discretion that past clients were promised, which is why past clients do not appear on this page.
The portfolio is the reputation, and the reputation is that no one has seen the portfolio.
The Photographer
Camera Hawaii is the private practice of a career photographer and cinematographer — a voting member of BAFTA, a member of the Association of Photographers and the Society of Camera Operators, with images published internationally and licensed through Getty. After twenty-four years working in the United Kingdom, he has returned home to Honolulu, where he is a fourth-generation kamaʻāina.
Decades on professional sets shape how every session is run: careful planning, unhurried direction, and finishing work carried out personally in Photoshop and Avid Media Composer. Nothing is delegated. Nothing is outsourced.
The Name
Longtime residents may remember the original Camera Hawaii — a commercial studio of the old school, with seamless backdrops, rooms of lighting gear, and shelves of Hasselblads and large-format cameras. In the late 1990s the photographer was one of its happy clients: the studio shot product work for his family's poi company, from styled tabletop food to sessions with models. Like many great film-era studios, it did not survive the digital turn.
This practice has no connection to that business beyond a client's admiration. When the name became available, it was registered out of respect for what it once stood for — craft, patience, and getting the shot right the first time.
Commissions
Portraiture
Considered portraits for personal and professional use — made on location across Oʻahu or in settings of your choosing, and finished to publication standard.
Intimate Portraiture
Fine-art boudoir and intimate sessions, directed with the patience and respect of a working professional. Sessions are collaborative from the first conversation: you set the boundaries, and they are kept.
Adults only. Identification is verified for all intimate work.Private Cinematography
Bespoke film commissions for private clients — including visitors to the islands who wish to mark their time here with something made only for them. Concept, location, filming, and edit are handled personally, from a single afternoon outdoors to a fully produced piece.
Adults only. Scope, boundaries, and delivery are settled in writing before any camera is raised.Post-Production & Editing
All editing is done in-house, by the photographer. Multi-camera work is cut in Avid Media Composer — the same system used on professional productions — with Adobe Premiere Pro and Filmora employed where a project calls for them. Damaged or aging footage is restored with Topaz, and where a piece benefits from an establishing or transitional shot that was never filmed, tasteful AI-generated inserts can be produced in Runway.
Restoration and editorial services are also available for material you already hold.Discretion
Discretion here is not a tone of voice. It is a set of working commitments, put in writing before any work begins:
- A mutual agreement governs every commission, including confidentiality terms signed by both parties before the first session.
- Your work is delivered to you, and to no one else. Nothing is published, shared, exhibited, or used to promote this studio.
- Material is handled securely and retained only as the written agreement and the law require — the handling of every file is agreed with you in advance, in plain terms.
- All inquiries are confidential, whether or not a commission follows.
CONSULTATION
Every commission begins with a private conversation — about what you have in mind, where, and within what boundaries. There is no obligation, and the conversation itself is held in the same confidence as the work.
